I Wonder Why

This is just a silly little poem dashed off in an idle moment, but with a powerful message.

I re-used the words a few years later in a song: The Silent Scream

They live, they breathe
They think, they feel
We call them animals.

They love, they learn
They laugh, they cry
We call them animals.

They run, they play
They sleep, they dream
We call them animals.

There is another kind
Who live, who breathe, who think, who feel
Who love, who learn, who laugh, who cry
Who run, who play, who sleep, who dream
We call them people.

We treat people as people
We treat animals as animals
All who live and die.

I wonder why.
